Tutorial 1: Injury Prevention in the Workplace/"Ergonomics"

In many offices around the world today many individuals suffer from various repetitive strain injuries. These injuries could include carpal tunnel syndrome, intersection syndrome, and focal dystonia. In order to help prevent these injuries proper workplace design of desks, keyboards, and chairs is necessary. The science behind the design and innovation of the workplace in order to better suit individuals is know as ergonomics. Ergonomics fits work conditions and job demands to the capabilities of the working population.

Many benefits can come from initiating and implementing ergonomic designs. Worker productivity and satisfaction increases when ergonomic designs are in place. Injuries and illnesses can be prevented and avoided by putting into practice ergonomic concepts. Efficiency levels tend to increase across the board simply by having safe furniture and easy to use interfaces to machines. Ergonomics looks for the best fit between workers and their technological tools and enviromnents.
Today we live in the midst of a technological revolution. Computers and their applications are everywhere and encompass the lives of many workers. For companies to remain competetive in our economy they must get the most out of their employees. Science has shown that their is an increase in productivity, efficiency, and motivation amongst workers when they feel comfortable with their environment and their surroundings. Taking the time and money to purchase ergonomic keyboards, mouses, and chairs could end up saving companies money as well as decreasing employee turnover.
